What Are the Types of Stainless Steel?
Stainless steel is a steel-based material that offers a high degree of resistance to problems such as corrosion and rust formation. This high resistance to rust is why so many companies choose it, and stainless steel offers those companies, their customers and end users a great deal of convenience.
Stainless steel is recyclable and therefore does not harm the environment. It is produced by melting steel scrap and imparting various properties to it, and is offered to users in many different varieties. Its long service life helps many companies increase their profits, and its low cost and affordable price open up a wide range of applications. Stainless steel is used most heavily in the construction sector, but it is also chosen and used in the food industry, surgical equipment, the automotive sector, the furniture sector and the home appliance sector.
To cover an ever-wider range of applications and adapt to the environments in which it is used, stainless steel comes in many varieties. These can be listed as follows:
-
Austenitic Stainless Steels
-
Duplex Stainless Steels
-
Ferritic Stainless Steels
-
Martensitic Stainless Steels
-
Precipitation-Hardening Stainless Steels
Austenitic Stainless Steels
This is the most widely used type of stainless steel in the world. Thanks to their special composition, austenitic stainless steels deliver high performance even at very low temperatures. The same special composition gives this type of stainless steel high resistance to corrosion.
Duplex Stainless Steels
Duplex steels combine high strength with high resistance to localized corrosion.
Ferritic Stainless Steels
Ferritic stainless steels are a group of stainless steels distinguished from the other types by their alloying elements. Because they are highly resistant to corrosion and rust formation, they are used in many industries.
Martensitic Stainless Steels
Martensitic steels have lower corrosion resistance than the other groups. This type of stainless steel is used mostly in operating room environments.
Precipitation-Hardening Stainless Steels
This group of stainless steels is based essentially on chromium and nickel. It is a type of stainless steel that contains a variety of additional substances and compounds in its structure.
